Applying Paradiddles to the Drum Set

Use your imagination and apply paradiddles to the drum set. Here are some ideas to get you started:

  • Paradiddle fill 1 - Play regular paradiddles on the snare but play the downbeat on a tom or cymbal. The downbeat is the first R in RLRR and the first L in LRLL.
  • Paradiddle fill 2 - Play one drum or cymbal with the
  • Paradiddle groove - Play paradiddles between your snare and bass foot while playing eighths on the hi-hat. This is a very funky beat.
  • Jazz Hi-Hat groove 1 - Play a jazz hi-hat with the right hand and add paradiddles with the left hand under the hi-hat.
  • Rock Paradiddle Inversion fills - Learn to play various paradiddle inversions as fills while moving around the drums.

Short Paradiddle Fill Beat

Because you can develop very fast paradiddles, you can utilize them in creative ways. The following example shows using a RLRRL single paradiddle with an ending note to add some spice to a slow or medium tempo rock beat.
