5/4 Jazz Drumset

The three most common beat grouping patterns for 5/4 is 5 (emphasis on 1), 3+2, and 2+3.

Influence of Take Five (3+2 beat grouping)

Perhaps the most known 5/4 jazz piece is Take Five by the Dave Brubeck Quartet (1961). Many jazz songs that take a 3+2 beat grouping sound similar to Take Five so let's start with a 3+2 beat grouping. Once mastered, you'll be able to play many 5/4 jazz songs just using variations of this beat.
